Going back to college to complete your degree is a big investment, but it doesn’t have to cost you your family. You can utilize a few strategies that turn going back to college into a rewarding experience for your whole family.
Involve Your Children
It can seem a little strange at first for children to see their parents going back to school and doing things like homework. With schoolwork and exam deadlines, it can feel like you don’t have enough time to spend with your kids. Moreover, your kids might feel like they are competing for your attention.
This is a good opportunity to involve your children in your education. Share with them what you are learning and how you are learning it with accelerated methods that they can use one day, too! Sit down with them and do homework together. It’s a good chance to have bonding time while giving them a positive role model for their studies. It just might help their grades.
Keep Your Focus
At the start of the year, it’s easy to keep your focus. You are excited, motivated, and there are no deadlines to worry about. Life hasn’t gotten in the way yet. A few weeks later, things are getting hectic and it’s hard to hold your head above water. This is the time when you really need to keep your focus.
Keep your focus by planning ahead. Map out what you need to do and when you need to do it. You want to make sure that you don’t fall behind in nailing your deadlines. Get your child’s school calendar to see how it meshes with your due dates and crunch times. Don’t forget to mark your exam weeks on your calendar and try to schedule any big work or family projects for the off weeks.
Have Fun with Your Family
Don’t lose sight of the reason why you are going back to school. An adult learner may have extra challenges, but they can still have fun. Set aside time throughout your year to do fun things with your children. Make sure that you plan at least one or two activities during their semester breaks to make up for lost time. Traditional college students blow off stress through parties, but an adult learner can relieve stress by having fun with their kids.
As you study more, you can grow even closer to your children and build an appreciation for education. Your degree completion program can get you so much more than a degree. It can be something that helps your family. Your hard work will be worth it for your children.
